Popular actor and filmmaker , Kunle Afolayan , has said it is important for African filmmakers to collaborate with relevant stakeholders in the global film industry in order to produce word – class films .

Afolayan maintained that his partnership with camera manufacturing company , Canon, had enhanced his creative freedom.

He said , “ When I first saw the Canon EOS C500 Mark II camera in 2019 , I was amazed at its capabilities .

Normally , it ’ s not in a director’ s place to tell a director of photography what kit to use but I always wanted to shoot in 4 K full – frame and I knew that the camera would make it to the Netflix approved list , which was vital for my production .

Thankfully , Jonathan Kovel, the DOP working on my new film , ‘ Citation’ loved the camera and we were able to shoot the movie with it .

That gave us another level of authenticity and creative freedom. ”

In a similar vein , veteran Algerian director, Merzak Allouache , noted that the camera was helpful to him while working on his new production , ‘ Une Famille ’ .

The Sales and Marketing Director at Canon Central and North Africa , Amine Djouhara , also announced that as part of efforts to better equip African filmmakers, a series of webinars would be held to educate them on new trends in the film industry .

He said , “ Now more than ever , we must come together to ensure that the global standstill does not set us back in our careers .

During these challenging times, these webinars will offer a virtual developmental tool to maintain the evolution of critical skills for continued and sustainable growth of the film industry . ”
