Tyson Fury ,Wilder rematch takes place on Feb 22
One of the most anticipated boxing matches ever is the rematch between British professional boxer , Tyson Fury , and his American counterpart , Deontay Wilder .
The rematch takes place on February 22 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Los Angeles , the United States and comes about a year after the two fought at the Los Angeles Staples Centre in December 2018 .
The match ended in a split draw .
In the first match between the two unbeaten fighters , Fury spent most of the evening frustrating Wilder with an effective jab and deft movement , even surviving a ninth- round knockdown to roar back in the final reel .
Wilder , whose WBC belt will be on the line when they meet again at the MGM Grand , tweeted , “ There will be no more unanswered questions and “ I will finish what I started . ”
But if Fury wins , it will put British fighters in charge of the heavyweight division , given that Anthony Joshua holds the other three belts of significance .
Regarded as one of the most feared fighters in the heavyweight boxing division, boasting an unbeaten record spanning 29 fights , 31- year – old Fury is a former world champion who defeated Ukrainian boxer , Vladimir Klitschko , in 2015 . Klitschko had before the defeat held a decade – long WBC heavyweight championship title .
Meanwhile , whoever wins between Wilder and Fury is expected to face Joshua , who holds the WBA , IBF , WBO and IBO heavyweight champion titles.
A $100m rematch
As hype builds up around the Fury vs Wilder rematch, Mr Bob Arum , the Chief Executive Officer of boxing promotion company , Top Rank, said the upcoming fight would be among the highest – grossing heavyweight title fights of all time .
Arum , 88, said the February 22 rematch between the two undefeated fighters should gross “well in excess of $ 100 m (N 36 bn) . ”
The previous match between Fury and Wilder reportedly had roughly 325 , 000 pay- per -view buys.
But Arum told CNBC he expected the second fight to see even more pay- per -view buys .
“ We are looking forward to doing record business with that fight , ” said Arum , noting that Top Rank would need to split the fight ’ s revenue with Premier Boxing Champions , who manages Wilder .
Floyd Mayweather Jr ’ s defeat of then – UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in 2017 was the highest – grossing boxing fight of all- time , generating roughly $ 500 m (N 181 bn) in pay- per – view sales.
Mayweather ’ s 2015 fight against Manny Pacquiao is second on the list , bringing in roughly $ 410 m (N 149 bn) , according to Business Insider.
“ While we may be somewhat less than those events , it ’ ll still be probably among the biggest grossing heavyweight championship fights of all time , ” Arum added .
Meanwhile , in the build – up to the rematch, Fury split with his trainer , Ben Davison , who had coached him since late 2017 and helped him lose a large amount of weight he had gained during his hiatus and restored him to fighting condition .
Davison was nominated for the 2018 Trainer of the Year due to his role in Fury’ s successful return to the ring .
The split was described as amicable and Davison wished Fury good luck in the rematch against Wilder .
After parting ways with Davison , Fury announced he had partnered with Javan Steward , nephew of Hall of Fame trainer , Emanuel Steward .
The boxer also said he would return to Kronk Gym , where he briefly trained in 2010.
From premature birth to heavyweight champion
Fury was born on August 12 , 1988 , in the Wythenshawe area of Manchester, England . He was reportedly born three months premature and weighed one pound .
His father , John , named him Tyson after the then-undefeated undisputed heavyweight world champion , Mike Tyson .
“ The doctors told me there was not much chance of him living .
I had lost two daughters in the same way who had been born prematurely, ” Fury ’ s father once told The Guardian UK in an interview
John said he named his son Tyson as he was a fighter and survived the premature birth .
Fury is said to be of Irish Traveller descent. Despite strongly identifying with his Irish heritage , he has had problems in gaining dual citizenship because his father ’ s birth in County Galway was not recorded civilly in the 1960 s, as Irish Travellers at the time only recorded births through baptism with the church rather than officially with the state .
Fury reputedly left school at the age of 11 and joined his father and three brothers tarmacking roads .
His mother , Amber , had 14 pregnancies in total, but only four of the children survived .
His sister, Ramona , was born in December 1997 but died within days .
This experience was said to have stayed with Fury, who was just nine years old at the time .
Fury began boxing at the age of 10 and his father acted as his trainer until 2011 when he was jailed for gouging out the eye of another Irish Traveller due to a long – standing feud .
Fury himself was raised to keep the fighting within the ring and has not had trouble with the law .
Meanwhile , the Fury family has a long history in boxing . Fury ’ s father competed in the 1980 s as “ Gypsy ” John Fury , initially as a bare- knuckle and unlicensed boxer and then as a professional boxer .
John had a professional record of 8 – 4 – 1 , with one of his losses being to Henry Akinwande, a former British professional boxer who competed from 1989 to 2008.
Fury is also a cousin of several professional boxers, including heavyweights Hughie Fury and Nathan Gorman ; retired WBO middleweight world champion Andy Lee ; and light heavyweight contender Hosea Burton .
His half – brother, Tommy Fury , made his professional debut on December 22, 2018 , under the tutelage of two – weight world champion Ricky Hatton .
Fury is also a distant relative of the bare- knuckle boxers Uriah Burton and Bartley Gorman , both considered “King of the Gypsies” , hence Fury ’ s own nickname of “ The Gypsy King . ”
Apart from The Gypsy King , Fury has also styled himself as “ The Furious One ” and “2 Fast. ”
Net worth and homes
Two months after his first fight with Wilder , Fury secured a five – fight contract with ESPN and Top Rank worth $ 100 m (N 36 bn) .
The deal, which is understood to cover his next five fights , will see Fury being broadcast on ESPN in the US while remaining on BT Sport in the UK .
The deal was also described as an indication of how his status has risen in the US after his performance against Wilder in December 2018 , in particular , his dramatic last – round recovery .
The ESPN contract was said to have shot his net worth up to $ 40m (N 14. 5 bn) . With his wealth , Fury perhaps has the means to buy whatever he wants .
When it comes to homes , his mix reportedly includes a caravan , a modest house in Morecambe and a mansion in Marbella , Spain , which reportedly cost about £ 6 m (N 2 . 8 bn ).
Fury ’ s luxury car collection
From having no money to signing a deal worth £ 80m , Fury has gone from rags to riches more than once .
The Versace- wearing , Ferrari -driving heavyweight boxer is also a heavyweight spender , as he loves his mega – money motors and designer wardrobe .
From Rolls – Royce to personalised Range Rovers , the boxer has a clear love for luxury motors .
One of his latest purchases is a £ 166 , 000 (N 79m ) red Ferrari Portofino , bought just days before his friend , Billy Saunders , snapped up the exact same model.
The Italian wheels were added to his car collection after forking out £ 282 , 000 (N 134 m ) on a brand- new Rolls Royce Dawn in 2018 .
Fury ’ s return to the ring that year also saw him buy a Range Rover Sport SVR , as well as a £ 240 , 000 ( N 114 m ) Ferrari GTC4 Lusso .
Fury has had a variety of Range Rovers , in white, grey and camouflage , which he personalised .
One was even changed to have Scottish tan leather , a quilted diamond stitched pattern and personalised ‘ Fury’ labels .
