Federal retirees decry hardship, unpaid pensions

Some federal retirees under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (Federal Branch , Lagos State) have decried the hardship they are facing due to the non – payment of their pensions.

Some of the retirees, who spoke to our correspondent , lamented that despite participating in the verification exercise conducted by the Pension Transitional Arrangement directorate , the office in charge of the federal pensioners , they had yet to be placed on the payroll .

A retiree from the Federal Civil Service , Michael Abajo , lamented the hardship he was facing as a result of unpaid pensions.

“ I retired in 2006 and did verification in 2017 , up till now , I have not been paid my monthly arrears or placed on the payroll , ” he said .

A retiree from the Federal Ministry of Works , Michael Olusegun , begged the Federal Government to pay his pensions.

“ I retired in 2007 , I have not been paid pensions or placed on the pay roll , ” he said .

The acting Chairman , NUP (Federal Branch , Lagos State) , Arashi Lawal , also decried the marginalisation of some federal civil service pensioners under the NUP .

Lawal equally lamented that many of the members were dying as they could not afford medical bills to take care of their health and eat well.

He alleged that after the election and establishment of the Federal Civil Service Pensioners Sector in July 2018 , the NUP headquarters had refused to allow the FCSP sector to operate accordingly .

He said , “The FCSP sector membership union due is still being held by the NUP in collaboration with PTAD and thereby our sector is being underfunded which is detrimental to all branches under it such as us in the Lagos branch and the 20 local council units under our supervision .

While faulting the information that all arrears of the pensioners had been paid , he said that PTAD had yet to offset the outstanding six months of the 33 per cent arrears which some other unions had received .

The Lagos NUP complained of shortfall in the amount given to it to run its affairs by the national NUP and PTAD monthly .

The union stated, “The fact remains that federal retirees are the highest contributor of union dues to the coffer of the NUP but ironically, the FCSP sector represented by Sunday Omezi and his team are inadequately funded .

“ It is needless to say that this absurdity has brought serious disarray to our state secretariat in Lagos and the entire 20 local council units under its supervision . ”

However , the Executive Secretary , PTAD , Sharon Ikeazor, stated in the directorate ’ s February report on its monthly activities that it was seeking the release of funds to complete the payment of the outstanding 33 per cent pension arrears .
