The Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council , South , Gbenga Daniel , has said his party suspects foul play in the postponement of the general elections.
Daniel , who expressed shock at the announcement , said he believed the Independent National Electoral Commission took the decision to serve certain interests .
He noted that although he supported the calls for sanctions , the chairman of INEC , Prof . Mahmood Yakubu , should be allowed to finish his job first , adding that sacking him now could create bigger problems .
The former Ogun State governor spoke on Saturday at his house in the Sagamu GRA , Sagamu , Ogun State.
He said , “This was an election that INEC had three years to plan for and even a few days ago , we had assurances that everything was set to go .
I am really in shock . I don’ t know their reason . The INEC chairman spoke of logistics , but I don’ t seem to understand it .
“ The international observers , some of them have been here for the last two weeks, what do you want them to do ? It is really not a good day for politics in Nigeria and in Africa .
“ Definitely , there is no smoke without fire . Yes , INEC is supposed to be independent , but they have appointed officers and there are people who confirm the appointment .
Definitely , this appears to be the voice of Jacob, but the hand of Esau .
“ Nigerians will not give room for foul play . But we should place them on notice that this is not about an election between individuals.
It is between INEC and Nigerians . INEC must be loyal to Nigerians.
“ It may not be easy for the INEC chairman to resign , except we want to create a bigger problem .
If the election is next week and you ask him to resign , there will be problems .
We should ask him to conduct the elections first before we talk about sanctions . ”
