Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick as Manchester City beat Arsenal 3-1 on Sunday (Monday NZT) to close the gap on English Premier League leaders Liverpool to just two points.
The Argentine striker opened the scoring after one minute, added a second just before half-time and finished off Arsenal with his third on the hour mark.
The result puts pressure on Liverpool, who play away to West Ham on Monday night (Tuesday NZT).
Earlier, Manchester United boosted their hopes of a top-four finish with a 1-0 win at Leicester in the early kick-off but it was City and Aguero who grabbed the headlines.
Just as they had done against Newcastle, City were ahead within a minute as Aguero opened the scoring, on 46 seconds. diving to head Aymeric Laporte’s cross past goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
When Laurent Koscielny headed an equaliser 10 minutes later, City fans might have feared a repeat of the Newcastle result, when the visitors came back to win.
But Aguero restored City’s lead in the 44th minute after meeting Raheem Sterling’s delivery with a tap-in at the far post.
The third goal came in untidy fashion as the ball bounced off his arm as he slid in to bundle it over the line after Leno pushed on Sterling’s cross.
It was the Argentine’s 10th Premier League hat-trick and moved City back aboce Tottenham Hotspur on the EPL ladder.
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford marked his 100th appearance for Manchester United with the winner at Leicester as coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer maintained his unbeaten record in charge of the Red Devils.
England international Rashford scored his eighth goal in 13 outings to earn a 1-0 victory at the King Power Stadium.
Solskjaer’s 10th game in charge brought a ninth win, with revived United not needing to leave third gear.
Paul Pogba and Rashford combined to seal another victory and the pair now have 12 goals under Solskjaer having struggled so badly under Jose Mourinho.
United are now just two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea while Leicester, who remain 11th, paid the price for another slow start and they have won just four home games in the league this term.
Leicester had beaten United just once in their previous 21 meetings and Rashford sent an early warning after just four minutes when he headed over from four yards.
