Governorship candidates decry alleged wasteful spending in Lagos

Four governorship candidates have attacked the Lagos State Government over what they described as wasteful spending, saying the resources of the state are not properly accounted for.

The candidates –Babatunde Gbadamosi (Action Democratic Party), Omolara Adesanya (Providence People’s Congress), Adebisi Ogunsanya (Young Progressives Party) and Olumuyiwa Fafowora (Africa Democratic Congress) – described the government as a prodigal son.

They spoke on Saturday during the British Broadcasting Corporation Yoruba Governorship Debate in Ikeja, Lagos.

The BBC had earlier said the Independent National Electoral Commission released the names of 41 candidates contesting the governorship seat in Lagos.

The media company said through polls conducted on its website and social media platforms, six governorship candidates were shortlisted, including Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress and Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party.

DoThe company said it extended invitation to all the candidates and got assurances, but Sanwo-Olu and Agbaje did not show up.

Gbadamosi, who promised to increase the salaries of civil servants if elected, was asked how he planned to generate revenue to fund his plan.

He said, “The way the government in power spends money is scary. An example of how they are wasting our resources is the railway they are constructing from Okokomaiko to CMS that they said would cost $1.2bn.

“When I investigated, the contractors they gave the job to report at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that they collected $181m for the blue line and red line, whereas this government said only the blue line is $1.2bn. Once we cut off wastes like this, we will have enough money to pay workers well.”

The YPP candidate, Ogunsanya, challenged the state government to put its revenue and expenditure on its website for scrutiny.

“Everything is concealed. What they spend the money on and how it is spent; nobody knows. The account of Lagos State is not stable. A lot of money comes in, but we don’t know how they spend it,” she added.

The candidate of the PPC, Adesanya, wondered what happened to the budgetary allocations every year.

She said, “When they made the budget for health care, they said they allocated N92.6bn. There are 26 registered general hospitals, 256 health centres in Lagos. There are 2,886 private hospitals. I decided to go to some of the health centres and I discovered there was nothing on the ground. Where did the money go?”

Fafowora, who queried Gbadamosi’s figure said the state government was mortgaging the future of the state, adding that divine intervention was needed in the Lagos.
